The Triplets of Belleville

A good movie you probably haven’t seen: The Triplets of Belleville.

Full disclosure: this is a very weird movie. It’s French (though it hardly matters, since there’s basically no dialog), the art is kind of creepy, and the story appears entirely aimless in the beginning. But it resolves into a very effective piece of art.

But then, isn’t this true for all good art? Art is about showing you something new about the world, a perspective or an aesthetic or a lifestyle that you’ve never been exposed to before. It’ll always seem weird in the beginning, until you get it.

Sylvain Chomet, the creator of this movie, created a short (30 mins) film which can be watched in its entirety on YouTube here. Triplets of Belleville is better, although once you have a taste for his style you’ll probably enjoy this as well. His next movie, The Illusionist, is scheduled to come out this year.
